It is finally here! After 7 years of complaining about the Affordable Care Act, the GOP finally released the plan that they have been working on to repeal and replace Obamacare. And if the President’s promise during his campaign is anything to go by, we will all get coverage!
I must say I am disappointed, I had high hopes for the American Health Care Act (Yeah, not really!). there are many aspects of the Obamacare that remains untouched, but they have also made some drastic changes. The bill, if passed, will defund planned Parenthood. The government will no longer get reimbursements through Medicaid for the services that it provides to the individuals under Medicaid.
However, the Trump administration said if Planned Parenthood stopped offering abortions, it would continue reimbursements for Medicaid patients . The administration is trying to push their agenda by crippling women’s access to health services. Planned Parenthood offers a variety of services that women use such as STI screening and treatments, mammograms, and prenatal care.
Also, the fact that abortion comes into effect as one of the deciding factors on where people get care is absurd. The Hyde Amendment, which does not allow taxpayer dollars to go toward abortions except in the case of incest or rape or to save the mother’s life, already prohibits the use of tax dollars to pay for abortion so the reason to defund Planned Parenthood is not yet understood. Instead, women could get those services from other community health centers that do not offer abortions.
